    Description

Vintage Tavo Silveira Mata Ortiz Casas Grandes pottery black on black carved bowl. This beautiful pottery bowl was made in Mata Ortiz, located in northwestern Chihuahua, Mexico. Mata Ortiz is known for pottery production modeled after 14th century Paquimé methods. The highly collectible pottery is made in traditional forms and features polychrome and black on black carved decoration, both of which are quite sought after.
This carved black on black piece was made by award winning artist Octavio “Tavo” Silveira. Silveira was trained as a potter by his father, Nicolas Silveira Ortiz, and is a past recipient of the prestigious Galardon or Best in Show prize in pottery sponsored by the Mata Ortiz municipal government.
This Tavo Silveira bowl has a low, symmetrical form with a rounded foot that flares out to the midpoint of the body and tapers in at the shoulder to form a wide mouth. The piece has matte and glossy decoration consisting of a series of vertical foliate shapes which encircle the exterior. There are repeating wave motifs which run around the base.
The bowl is in excellent condition with no chips, cracks or repairs. The piece stands 4.75" tall and is 4.25" in diameter at the mouth. The body is approximately 7" across at its widest point. The underside of the bowl is signed "Tavo Silveira" by the artist. Small marks but smooth on bottom see photos.
This Casas Grandes bowl displays beautifully and would be a fantastic addition to a collection of fine Southwestern art pottery. A lovely piece.
