North Bros. YANKEE No. 1530 Hand Drill - BEST EVER MADE!
GREAT CONDITION. American ingenuity at its best. Unbeatable Yankee quality. No other American manufacturer ever offered a hand drill with this many "bells and whistles." The five position ratchet shifter (first photo) allows the user to select: Plain Drill, Left Hand Ratchet, Right Hand Ratchet, Double Ratchet, or Gears Locked. The operation of the drill is best described by quoting directly from an old North Brothers Catalog. "Yankee drills work in ways and places where no other drilling tool can be worked at all. Even where you have but an inch or so in which to move crank, the drill may be operated - either right or left ratchet, or double ratchet. When on "double ratchet" the drill cuts continuously on both forward and back movements of the crank. By reason of its compactness (10-1/2" long) and convenience, No. 1530A has wide general use by mechanics in all trades."
In clean but "uncleaned " condition, this EXCELLENT example is clearly marked on the shifter cover with the North Bros. "Yankee" name. I have thoroughly tested the drill under load in every operating position and it works beautifully. It is not damaged in any way save for some  finish loss and very light dinging and scratching in the wood.
Along with the ability to work in impossibly close quarters, it gives the fine craftsman a sense of feel and control that you simply can not get with today's power tools. Makita eat your heart out!
Understandably expensive when compared to other hand drills that were then on the market, these incredible little drills were never too common and they are very difficult to find today. Especially in this Condition. Thank goodness for eBay! Buy It NOW!!
