Nicolas was quite an innovator in materials and techniques and his work is always part of a comprehensive collection of the great masters of Mata Ortiz. Nicolás Quezada carefully steadies his right hand with the left, to create beautiful works. Nicolas' techniques are widely used today by master potters. Nicolas uses only the finest materials to ensure his works last. The whole process, from gathering the clays to firing the completed earthenware is called la lucha, the struggle, by the potters like Nicolas Quezada who is is considered one of innovators and top four potters of Mata Ortiz. Mata Ortiz pottery is completely hand crafted. No pottery wheels or kilns are used. All materials including the color pigments are collected locally and created by the artists themselves and designs are painted using human hair brushes.
