I obtained this Oscar Quezada, Paquime design pottery directly from the man who brought it into the U.S..
Artist Quezada is a master at portraying his own interpretation of the ancient Paquime cultural designs originating in the Mata Ortiz region. His Creations are highly valued for their intricate and intense patterns, all hand painted in exquisite detail. His talent is also valued for his ability to hand coil low flattened shapes such as this pottery.
The shades are soft and comforting and cool. Thinner sashes of ice mint green traverse the entirety of the pottery with larger sashes of blue in between. The Paquime influence of these designs is intense. All materials used to make these fine pieces are derived from the land
surrounding
Mata Ortiz. The soil types for the clay and the materials for dyes occur in unique blends only in this area of Chihuahua. The fact this is created by hand, with such precision and detail, in some cases on a near microscopic scale, is indeed wondrous. The artists skills are ultimate and the time to create his works is immense.

Mata Ortiz is legendary, both the village and the pottery taking it's name. I am very proud to be the largest seller of these pieces on eBay!
In the 70's a young man began experimenting with recreating ancient pottery he would come across. He used the same clay sand mixtures from materials found in the area in which the ancients lived and made their pottery. The same firing techniques using the same local materials eventually created the same magnificent results. Half a century later and much of the village of Mata Ortiz has taken on these incredible skills for creating masterpieces, with each artist contributing hers and his own sense of beauty.
The designs are bold, earthy and individualistic.
Paint brushes consisting of one or two human hairs create the finest lines. Images revealed through carvings are created by nearly microscopic sharpened points. Paints are developed from minerals found in the surrounding desert. Many colors are only revealed after intense firing at very high temperatures. These creations are truly unique transformations that only this small little region of the world can create from it's own soil.
I have been tangentially around Mata Ortiz for 30 years. Now I am spiritually bound by their overwhelming beauty and intense and intricate designs. When I look at one of the pieces, I feel I am meeting in person the artists who created this, and am visiting their home.
This pot is signed by its creator, Oscar Quezada. A search of his name will bring you to some fascinating pieces of his artistry. Please be sure to view a short video of this pottery.
