The Pajarito family is one of the most significant families in Tonala producing canelo ware. Canela in spanish mean cinammon, a name given to this pottery due to the variety of earth tones with which it is decorated. Their pottery is shaped by hand and fired in a wood-burning kiln for approximately three hours.
In 2002, Nicasion Pajarito Gonzalez, born in 1935 and the patriarch of the family, received the National Ceramics Prize of Tlaquepaque , Kalisco. He was added to the Masters of Mexican Folk Art book in 1998. The family was added to the book, published by Fomento Cultural Banamex, in 2021.
