The onboard Solid Rocket Booster (SRB) Command Destruct System (CDS) allows the Range Safety Officer to intentionally destroy the SRB in the event of flight path deviation, improper flight parameters, or inadvertent separations. This Confined Detonating Fuse (CDF) Manifold Exploding Bridge Wire (EBW) is the final communication path to the explosive shaped charge destroying the SRB. NASA has only given that command once, 1-28-1986 during the loss of Challenger. From the estate of Charles Bell, a former NASA Engineer and collector of space program hardware in May 2000.
