    Description

    This is a
    pair
    traditional clay figures of a
    male dancer from
    Danza
de los Viejitos (dance of the old man)
    and a female
    Purepecha
    Woman.
I purchased this piece directly from the artist...
    Adelaida Pascual
    from
    Ocumicho
Michoacán Mexico.  It is truly a one of a kind piece.. Purchased directly from the artist...
(see 7th photo, Adelaida).   This listing is for both figures....
    Female
    measures 9 1/2 inches tall by 4 inches wide & 3 1/2 inches deep.
    M
    ale Devil
measures 9 inches tall by 4 inches wide & 4 inches deep.
    I recently
    received
    a
huge shipment from Mexico with custom
    made pieces
by some of my favorite artists...
Included in this shipment are many pieces by
    Adelanida
    and her mother
    Tomasa Gonzala Sanchez.
    These pieces are
crafted from locally collected clays then fired in a pit kiln before being meticulously painted. Each one is a unique one of a kind work of art.
"In the rural Mexican state of Michoacán, devils, mermaids, saints, sun gods, and drunks can all be found mixing it up and having a great time. Each of these characters, and many more, inhabit the strange universe depicted in sculptures produced in the tiny town of Ocumicho.
These bizarre pottery tableaux feature hybrid scenes from everyday life, religious allegories, and native folklore..... Resembling Hieronymus Bosch’s nightmarish landscapes from the 1500s, but with a Catholic-folk art twist, these ceramic fantasies are found nowhere else."
