Here we have anAntique
M & K, PHILA No. 8 Barn Beam Timber Framing T- Handle Auger,
2 in. Dia.
I could not find any info about the maker: "M & K, PHILA". There were many auger bit makers working out of Phila. in the 1800's.
The shaft is stamped with the makers name plus and arrow logo and "8'. (means 8 quarters or 2 in.). T-Augers were typically used in timber framing, barn beam type construction. The shaft is 5/8" round and is approx. 18" long below the handle. The Bit end measures out to 2" in diameter. It has good cutter spurs. The starter screw is a little on the short side. The auger flutes have been lightly cleaned and are in very good condition. The nicely turned heavy duty handle appears to be either Ash or Hickory. There are a few short age-related tight cracks in the handle and it has 2 additional iron pins for support at the center. The handle is approx.16" Long. There are no owner marks.
