1867-1890 Antique W. T. Copeland English Fish Plate
"W. T. Copeland & Sons" of "Stoke Upon Trent" made this fine English red and white fish plate. The shade of red in the border tends toward the cranberry with a slightly lighter red in the fish design. The mold for the plate has some handsome features. The border is notched in four places leading to raised ridges on the border. The edge of the center section has two rows of raised fish scales. In the center design a large fish is in the foreground and a smaller fish in the background. Sea plants accent the design. On the border there are three panels with flowers and leaves alternating with three geometric panels each with a different geometric design. Fish scales are in one of the panels, echoing the raised fish scales outlining the center scene. On the reverse we see the marks in red - a circle with the company name around a crown. Below is a banner with the location of the company - Stoke Upon Trent. This mark was used between 1867 and 1890. The plate is 9 inches in diameter. There are no chips, hairlines, or repairs, only minor crazing.
